Isle of Eigg Residents Association (IERA) Statement in Solidarity with Palestine

Eigg’s community believes that we need to speak truth to power, whether as part of our island governance or within governance structures in Highland, Scotland, or UK.  Speaking truth to power means challenging injustice and holding those in power accountable, whether that be land reform, environmental justice, or calling for peace.

We believe there should be an immediate ceasefire, that the Israeli Government should lift all restrictions on entry and distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza, and in peace for all.

Eigg residents recognise that we are a small number of people but believe adding our community’s name to others calling for similar action can effect change. That through collective voice, communities and individuals across Scotland, the UK and beyond can push our governments to stop perpetuating conflict and the circle of violence.

People living on Eigg are acting individually and as a community in different ways to call for a meaningful peace in Palestine and Israel. These include:

  • Non-violent direct action such as BDS, and marches
  • Educating ourselves
  • Donating and fundraising
  • Calling out hate speech and discrimination; in this context, antisemitism and Islamophobia, but also extreme intolerance to the views of others.
  • Publicly advocating for an end to violations of international law, an end to the unlawful occupation of Palestine, and for a just peace for all.
  • Urging our politicians to act – speaking to and writing letters to our MPs, MSPs, and signing petitions
  • Continuing to call for the violence to stop
